The Girl and Mermaids

When bathing the Girl, her mother and I would encourage her to do the ‘mermaid hair’, which is to say dunk her hair back and let it fan around her like that of a mermaid. It helps rinse it out more thoroughly.  Here’s a shot.

The Girl has a mermaid doll that she calls Princess Bella, whom she named herself when she was three. I don’t know where the name came from, but she still plays with Princess Bella today at her mum’s house.

What is it about mythical creatures that seem to transcend generations? Perhaps they allow us to think that somewhere, there are lands that are greater than ours, where beauty rules in place of greed.

The Girl

“The Girl” is the name I regularly give my daughter online, although I’ve caught myself doing it in reference to her in real life, too.  It’s not that I am trying to protect her identity, primarily. Although, I think later it will come in handy. After all, it’s her name, not mine. She should have some control over it. So, until she decides how she wants to be represented, “The Girl” it is.

I’ve started this blog, finally, because I want to find a way of capturing what this period of history and those to come, will feel like. This is true both for her, as it is for me. I hope to help her clarify a thread through her life, and this blog is a tool for that, to get an idea of who she was as she grew up, from my perspective. Hopefully too, it will be a means of greater understanding between the two of us. It’s also for me; to help me get my expressions down about who I am, and how my role of dad fits in there.
